PAP Smear Test
Also known as a cytology or smear test, the PAP test checks the condition of the cells in the cervix and vagina, which, when abnormal, can indicate cancer or precancerous conditions. Sexually active women between the ages of 25 and 70 should therefore undergo this simple and quick screening test on a regular basis. To make it accessible to women in Rosemère and the surrounding area, it can be done directly at the Clinique médicale privée Humani.

How does the PAP test work?
During this test, cells are collected from the cervix and vagina by gently scraping with a spatula, brush, or stick. These cells are then placed in a reactive liquid and examined under a microscope to determine whether they are normal or not. Any abnormalities detected may indicate several things:
- A precancerous condition or cancer of the cervix and/or vagina:
This is the main cause of these abnormalities, or at least the one that is most often sought to diagnose.
-
An infection caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV):
If left untreated, this type of infection can lead to the development of precancerous or cancerous cells.
- Another inflammation or infection of the vagina or cervix:
This can be viral, bacterial, or yeast-based.
- A non-cancerous polyp or cyst.
An important test
The PAP test can diagnose cancer and other asymptomatic conditions and infections. That is why it is recommended that sexually active women have one every three years between the ages of 25 and 70. This is a good way to ensure the health of the lower reproductive tract, which is particularly vulnerable to HPV. This is a sexually transmitted virus which, although not the only risk factor, can cause cervical cancer. This preventive test is usually straightforward and painless (although it can feel uncomfortable), but it may cause slight bleeding.
Here are a few guidelines to follow to ensure that the test is carried out correctly and that the results are clear
- Do not have your period on the day of the test.
- Do not have sex and avoid using vaginal douches, vaginal medication, or contraceptive cream in the 24 hours prior to the test.
- Do not have a PAP test if you have had a vaginal infection in the last 14 days.
For a quick and easy PAP test
The PAP test can be done during your medical or pelvic exam, or during a specific appointment. This screening test can be performed by a doctor or a nurse practitioner. Regardless of when and how the test is performed, the doctors at the Humani Clinic in Rosemère will follow up with you and guide you through the next steps. For example, if the results are abnormal (the cells show abnormalities), other tests may be prescribed to ensure a clear diagnosis.
