NEXPLANON Contraceptive Implant
The Humani Clinic now offers the NEXPLANON® implant. The implant contains etonogestrel, a hormone prescribed by a healthcare professional to prevent pregnancy.
The implant offers excellent long-term protection against pregnancy—it is over 99% effective. The implant works as well as surgical sterilization and IUDs.

The NEXPLANON implant
The implant is a contraceptive method approved by Health Canada since September 2020.
It is flexible, about the size of a matchstick, and is placed under the skin of the upper arm. Insertion of the contraceptive implant takes only a few minutes. A local anesthetic is injected at the insertion site. A qualified healthcare professional inserts the implant into your upper non-dominant arm. You must not be pregnant or think you might be pregnant to have the implant inserted.
Once the implant is in place, you hardly need to think about it—it works until its expiration date or until you have it removed. This means you don't have to go to the pharmacy, take a pill, or insert a ring, and you don't have to do anything before sex to prevent pregnancy.
Most of the time, the implant is not visible under the skin, so no one will know you have it unless you tell them.
The implant works by releasing a small, steady dose of progesterone, which prevents the egg from being released by the ovary and stops sperm from reaching the ovary to fertilize it.
The implant can help reduce menstrual cramps. It also makes periods much lighter—and 1 in 3 people who use the implant stop having periods altogether after a year.
The implant can be used if you are breastfeeding because the hormones in the contraceptive implant do not affect your breast milk or the amount of milk you produce, and they will have no effect on your baby. The implant is a safe method of contraception to use while breastfeeding, and it is very effective at preventing pregnancy.
The implant can therefore be considered once breastfeeding is well established and should be postponed if this is not the case.
In summary, the implant has several advantages:
- It is safe.
- No gynecological examination is required for insertion.
- It is reversible. A healthcare provider can therefore remove it at any time if you wish to become pregnant.
- You don't have to think about it. You will need to have it replaced every three years.
- It does not contain estrogen. (Some methods containing estrogen may increase the risk of blood clots).
- Reduced bleeding and dysmenorrhea (painful periods).
Consult our practitioners, who will listen to your needs and determine whether this method of contraception is right for you and prescribe, insert, or remove the contraceptive implant contraceptive.
