Obesity Clinic
Excess weight, which is becoming increasingly common in our societies, affects many patients. Two out of three Canadian adults are overweight and/or obese.
A person's body weight is assessed using the body mass index or BMI. BMI is a calculation based on a person's weight and height. It is often used to determine if a person is overweight.

BMI = weight (kg) divided by height squared (meters squared)
For example, a man weighing 70 kg and measuring 1.72 m will have a BMI of:
70 / 1.72 x 1.72 = 70 / 2.96 = 23.6
A person is considered overweight when their BMI is above 25.
A person with a BMI of 30 or above is considered obese. It is at this point that certain new drug treatments may be considered.
Obesity is a complex issue that goes beyond diet and exercise.
Several hormones and transmitters in the brain regulate the weight of the human body.
Available medications
Saxenda (liraglutide), Ozempic or Wegovy (semaglutide), and Contrave (naltrexone/bupropion) are three medications with a reasonable side effect profile that have a beneficial effect on weight loss in diabetic and non-diabetic patients.
A new medication, Mounjaro™ (tirzepatide), has been added to this class of medications. Please note that for obesity, these medications are not covered by the RAMQ or by some private insurance plans. You will need to check with your insurance provider. Treatment can cost up to approximately $400 per month.
Long-lasting benefits
With healthy lifestyle habits and medical supervision, these drugs can lead to weight loss of 5 to 20% of body weight, depending on each person's response.
If this is the case for you, this change will have a significant positive effect on your health. For example, you may notice a reduction in pain, gastroesophageal reflux, sleep apnea, and an improvement in cholesterol, energy levels, blood pressure, blood sugar, fertility, cancer risk, and probably self-esteem.
The Humani Medical Clinic does not offer miracle solutions or miracle diets.
However, our medical team, led by Dr. Geneviève Filteau, is passionate about this subject and will provide you with extensive information about obesity as a chronic disease.
