What is a cortisone injection and what is it used for?
Cortisone is a medication used in particular for its anti-inflammatory properties. It can be administered orally, topically, or by direct injection into the site of inflammation. In the latter case, called infiltration, it is mixed with an anesthetic agent. Injections are used to treat various musculoskeletal problems affecting different joints (hands and fingers, knees, shoulders, elbows, hips, spine, etc.) and, above all, to relieve the pain associated with them. As the effects vary in duration, it is sometimes necessary to repeat the procedure, but no more than four injections should be given in the same year.
Why are viscosupplementation agents used?
Synvisc, the viscosupplementation agent used at Humani, is an alternative to cortisone for treating knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. This viscous solution is injected directly into the joint capsule and acts like synovial fluid, lubricating the joint while cushioning shocks and friction. This liquid orthosis reduces knee pain while improving the quality and range of movement. The injection can be repeated when the effect wears off, usually after 6 to 12 months.
Prolotherapy: a new service
Prolotherapy is a regenerative medicine that involves injecting sugar (dextrose) into joints, tendons, or ligaments to stimulate cell growth and repair damaged tissue.
Less expensive than PRP (platelet-rich plasma), prolotherapy has fewer side effects than other injections.
Prolotherapy is useful for joint pain lasting more than one month. There is no limit to the number of injections, but 1 to 3 treatments are necessary (maximum 6 treatments).
