Medicine for Babies
At Humani, your private medical clinic in Rosemère, we offer a wide range of medical services to patients of all ages. Our team includes Dr. Geneviève Filteau, a general practitioner who is passionate about pediatric care. Thanks to her, we offer a variety of services for infants and babies. Whether you need regular health checkups or a consultation about a specific problem, we can meet your needs and those of your little one.

The importance of postnatal care
Among the services offered in pediatric medicine is regular medical follow-up. This is particularly important between birth and 18 months of age. This is a pivotal period in a child's growth and development. This is why the schedule of visits is so busy for infants and then babies (the interval between visits increases from two weeks to six months during this period). During these appointments, the doctor checks whether the child's growth is following a normal curve (based on their weight and height) and whether they are developing well cognitively, motorically, and emotionally. Attention is also paid to the quality of nutrition, digestion, elimination, and sleep, as well as potential health problems (illnesses, irregular conditions).
Follow-up examinations are a good opportunity to identify and treat certain conditions. It is also possible to consult directly for the following problems or for minor emergencies.
Some problems treated in pediatric medicine

-
Thrush:This infection of the mucous membranes of the mouth is caused by a fungus (yeast) called candida albicans. It appears as whitish patches (similar to curdled milk) on the tongue, inside the cheeks, or on the palate. It is often accompanied by diaper rash. It mainly affects babies under six months of age and is common when taking certain antibiotics or medications that weaken the immune system. Thrush usually goes away after one or two weeks. If it persists, consult us. We can assess the situation and, if necessary, prescribe a mild antifungal medication (spray or cream).
-
Reflux Problems:Reflux, which is when stomach contents come back up into the esophagus, can be simple or complicated. In the first case, it's called normal regurgitation, which is usually harmless and goes away with time. Complicated reflux, on the other hand, is accompanied by other signs: pain or agitation during feedings, poor sleep, frequent coughing or bronchospasms, or insufficient weight gain. At this point, consult a doctor who will identify the problem and suggest solutions for control
-
Colic :This is the name given to episodes of intense crying, often accompanied by other signs (clenched fists, legs curled up or tucked toward the abdomen, hard and tense stomach, gas). Colic is diagnosed when crying lasts at least three hours a day and occurs more than three times a week for several consecutive weeks. This does not usually indicate an identifiable health problem. However, if such episodes occur before the infant is three weeks old or begin after eight weeks, it is best to consult a doctor. The same applies if colic is accompanied by fever, diarrhea, blood in the stool, or feeding or sleeping problems. In these cases, they may be a sign of other disorders.
-
Developmental Problems :Motor, cognitive, and emotional development varies from one baby to another. However, it is important that it follows a normal curve. There are also scales to help assess motor development. These are useful for identifying and quickly addressing major problems (difficulty sitting, moving, grasping objects, etc.), which may be signs of more serious neurological diseases and disorders. Development will of course be monitored during routine check-ups, but you can also consult a doctor if your child shows significant or multiple delays that you find worrying.
-
Autism Spectrum Disorder in Infants and BabiesAlthough difficulties associated with autism spectrum disorder (autism, Asperger syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified) become more pronounced with age, signs can be observed in the first months of life. The development and acquisition of certain skills naturally vary from child to child, but there are some warning signs that should raise alarm bells. If these signs are observed, the doctor will pay attention to them during their examinations. If there are any doubts, an assessment process may be initiated or you may be referred to other professionals and resources for a clear diagnosis.
For example :
- Avoiding eye contact or an inability to make eye contact with parents;
- Language delays (particularly noticeable between 12 and 24 months);
- Difficulty reproducing certain gestures (pointing, waving goodbye, clapping hands);
- A lack of joint attention, i.e., the ability to follow someone else's gaze;
- Poor posture (limpness or stiffness);
- The child responds little or not at all to their name;
- Poor display of emotions;
- Loss of acquired skills (regression).
-
Breastfeeding Problems :It is normal to need to make adjustments when breastfeeding. At least in the early stages. However, problems can persist (refusal to breastfeed, difficulty latching on, pain, etc.). These can sometimes be overcome with the support and advice of a nurse. However, they may be a sign of other conditions that a doctor can better identify (tongue-tie, neck muscle stiffness, etc.). So don't hesitate to talk about your breastfeeding difficulties during your baby's checkups.
