STI Clinic
An active sex life is natural and healthy—as long as you are aware of the risks of STIs. These infections, which are sexually transmitted and blood-borne, can be contracted more easily when you frequently change partners or have unprotected sex. Since many STIs don't show any symptoms, it's important to get tested regularly. It's a simple and responsible way to take care of your health—and protect your partners from the complications these infections can cause.

Why is it important to get tested for STIs?
STIs (formerly known as STDs) are a group of infections that are mainly transmitted through bodily fluids, such as saliva, semen, vaginal secretions, or urine. They are most often spread through sexual contact, whether oral, vaginal, or anal. The second “S” in the acronym also refers to infections that can be transmitted through blood, particularly when using contaminated equipment for injection, piercing, or tattooing.
Often without visible symptoms, these infections can go unnoticed, making screening all the more important.
The main STIs in circulation
- Herpes
Whether oral (type 1) or genital (type 2), herpes can be transmitted through oral, vaginal, or anal sex, or through simple intimate contact. Although there is no definitive cure, medications can help reduce symptoms and transmission of the virus.
- Condyloma
Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), this infection is often asymptomatic but can sometimes cause genital warts. It is transmitted through intimate contact or full sexual intercourse.
- Chlamydia and gonorrhea
These two infections, which can sometimes occur simultaneously, are caused by bacteria transmitted through oral, vaginal, or anal sex. Fortunately, they can be effectively treated with antibiotics.
- Syphilis
Caused by a bacterium, this infection is transmitted through penetrative sex or, in the case of lesions, through direct skin-to-skin contact. Antibiotic treatment is usually sufficient to cure it.
- Hepatitis (B and C)
These are liver diseases caused by distinct viruses. In both cases, they are transmitted through blood contact, sharing drug injection equipment, and piercings or tattoos done with contaminated equipment. Hepatitis B can also be transmitted through sexual intercourse (oral, vaginal, or anal).
- HIV/AIDS
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which is transmitted through sexual intercourse or blood contact, attacks and weakens the immune system. Without treatment, the disease progresses to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
