  • Sleep apnea

Sleep apnea (i.e., obstructive sleep apnea or sleep-disordered breathing) is a health problem that causes individuals to have difficulty breathing during sleep, and they often (but not always) experience episodes of snoring and moments when they stop breathing during sleep and/or wake up snorting.

This pause in breathing, or “apnea,” lasts about 10 to 30 seconds and can occur repeatedly during sleep. Sleep apnea can seriously affect the health and quality of life of those who suffer from it.

  • Insomnia

Insomnia, or difficulty sleeping, is quite common. About 30% of adults say they have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting restful sleep. About 10% of the population has sleep problems so serious that they experience difficulties or distress during the day. The main causes of insomnia in adults are stress, anxiety, and depression.

  • Restless legs syndrome

People who suffer from this condition say they feel the need to move their legs while in bed. This syndrome can manifest itself in the form of cramps and seriously compromise their ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. If you think you or someone you know may have restless legs syndrome, it is important to get tested so that appropriate measures can be taken to ensure a better quality of life.

  • Narcolepsy

People with narcolepsy have “sleep attacks,” which are episodes where they suddenly fall asleep or experience extreme and overwhelming fatigue. A service provided by our healthcare professionals can diagnose narcolepsy through a series of assessments and tests. These include an overnight sleep study, an assessment of excessive daytime sleepiness, and a test of certain neurotransmitter levels.

Bruxisme
  • Bruxism

People who grind or clench their teeth may wake up with a headache, earache, or toothache. Their facial muscles may be sore and their jaw joints may be sensitive.

In addition to the discomfort it causes, grinding can eventually damage dental restorations and may loosen teeth. Bruxism is often caused by stress or anxiety and can lead to serious dental problems if left untreated. It can also cause damage to the temporomandibular joints (the joints that connect the lower jaw to the skull).

Although the cause of bruxism is not fully understood, several factors may be involved. Stressful situations, sleep problems, abnormal bite, and crooked or missing teeth can all contribute. Treatments for bruxism generally range from lifestyle changes to medication and even occlusal devices (occlusal splints). Consulting a professional is the best way to find the right treatment solution.

Whether you live in Laval, Rosemère, Terrebonne, Mirabel, Blainville, or any other municipality in the Greater Montreal area, don't hesitate to consult our healthcare providers if you think you suffer from bruxism, insomnia, sleep apnea, or narcolepsy.
