Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection satisfactory for sexual intercourse. This disorder affects many men between the ages of 40 and 70 and can cause psychological distress in some of them. The causes can be vascular, neurological, hormonal, or psychological, such as stress.

Dysfonction érectile

Erectile problems and your sexual health

During a normal erection, physical and/or mental stimulation triggers a chain of reactions that causes the blood vessels in the penis to dilate, increasing blood flow and allowing the penis to become hard. In the case of erectile dysfunction, these mechanisms may be impaired, resulting in a less intense erection that can interfere with sexual function.

It is therefore important to assess erectile dysfunction, as it can be an early sign of cardiovascular, hormonal, psychological, or urological disease.

For example, if the arteries in the penis are damaged, it is highly likely that those in the heart are also damaged. This is why, during the initial consultation, we will ask you about your lifestyle and medical history in order to assess your cardiovascular risk. Blood tests may be requested to assess your cardiovascular health. An assessment of your psychological health will also be discussed. In some cases, erectile dysfunction is hormonal and is associated with a gradual decline in testosterone, known as andropause.

Traitement de la dysfonction érectile à notre clinique médicale de Rosemère

Treatment of erectile dysfunction at our medical clinic in Rosemère

Treatment for erectile dysfunction can greatly improve your quality of life, as this problem can lead to psychological difficulties if left untreated.

There are several options available to you. The preferred first-line options are medications called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors. Their purpose is to promote blood flow to the penis in order to achieve a satisfactory erection. This medication is usually taken 30 minutes to 1 hour before sexual intercourse for maximum effectiveness. The duration of action may vary from one medication to another.

Depending on the cause of the erectile dysfunction, other options are also available.

Sometimes treatments are ineffective in some patients. If this is the case, we can refer you to a urologist. There are devices that can be surgically implanted that may be effective. The specialist will explain the treatment options to you to ensure that you choose the right alternative for your situation.

Sometimes erectile dysfunction can be psychological. Some men describe a vicious cycle of performance anxiety during sexual intercourse. Psychological therapy may be beneficial for these men.
